The Impact of Each Decision We Make

donutEven one small decision has an outcome. Let me explain what I mean …

When I make a decision (and it can be as small as “should I eat this benign, scrumptious, glazed donut?”), I am selecting between two or more possible actions.

And whether I’m consciously aware of it or not at the moment of choice, my decision always has an outcome. Always.

What do I really want in life?

If I want to live long and to experience wellness, I may want to think harder about taking thousands of donuts into my body over the months and years. Each donut = a decision.

Decisions aggregate. They add up and take us to places we desire in life … or places we don’t.

The domino effect: every decision matters

Chris Brogan has me thinking about decisions as dominoes. Each decision is never really alone. Each one moves us toward or away from other decisions we can make.

And decisions shape our lives.

each decision, dominoes

Each decision brings us toward other decisions in the same direction. Like dominoes, the decisions begin to fall in line … for the good or the bad.

The word decision is traced back to the Latin word decisio. It literally means a cutting off.

When we make a decisions, we are discriminating. We are making judgments, cutting ourselves off from things and opening ourselves to new patterns and possibilities.

When I said “yes” to Penelope in marriage, I said “no” to every other woman on the planet. She did the same with every other man on earth. Those two decisions lead to many other decisions in a growing marriage — the domino effect.

Even before we were married, we were each making decisions all of the time … decisions about who we were becoming as persons who would attract, build and sustain a relationship. What is the outcome? A stable relationship and family life that leads us into many good things, setting the table for other areas of our lives.

I’m starting to tell my daughters, “You are choosing your lifetime mate right now by the decisions you make and who you are becoming.”

Make up your mind

Cultivate a mindset that is resolute — solid, certain, decided.

  • Double-mindedness allows instability, alienating us from authentic wisdom and what could be the best for our lives.
  • A strong mind flows from a strong heart. And a strong mind exercises a strong will.
  • Don’t forget your heartset. I believe our mindset flows from our heartset … our intuition, understanding and discernment. What is the affection of our heart? Take the time to reflect: what is my life really inclined toward? The inspired proverb says, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Let’s be mindful. It’s easy to see the big decisions in life. But let’s not be deceived — every decision matters, leading us to more decisions in the same direction which give shape to our lives.

What are your thoughts? Can you see this in your own life? How will you move forward?
